About the project “Singing in Nature’s Acoustic Environment”
The finest examples of traditional Latvian vocal music were developed and long practised outdoors, in a natural acoustic environment, with the singers making use of various elements in their surroundings to enhance the sound. We can thus assume that nature played a significant role in and influenced the form, stylistics, manner of singing and other elements of this musical tradition.
Many written sources describe the Latvian tradition of singing outdoors in nature, but they lack audio documentation. It is for this reason that Saucējas decided to develop a project that explored this musical tradition from both the theoretical and practical aspect and also made audio ecordings of songs sung outdoors.
The group relied on Latvian folk song texts (caled dainas) about singing as a significant source of information for the study. The “In Nature” album comprises the results of this project, which was carried out from 2017 to 2020.
