Broņislava Martuževa

The poet Broņislava Martuževa (1924-2012) is a unique phenomenon in Latvian cultural history. In the years after the war, all her family has involved in the National Resistance Movement. The poet was included in the wanted persons list and thus lived for five years (1946-1951) hidden in a bunker under the floor of her family home. After being arrested, Martuževa‘s family was senteneced for high treason and she returned from incarceration in Siberia in 1956. Martuževa is author of a number of poetry collections, she is a Latvian traditional singer and story-teller, and has composed melodies for both her own and other author’s verses. In 1994 she received the Three Star Order.
