The Latvian women’s folklore ensemble “Vilcenes” was established in 1996 by the wifes and brides of the members of the men’s ensemble “Vilki”. For this reason the main repertoire of “Vilcenes” consists of the songs of warroir’s wifes and brides, which are some of the oldest songs in Latvian folklore.A great flourishing of ethnic culture took place during the 10th-13th centuries. During this time certain singing traditions took root, and many of these traditions have remained relatively unchanged to this day. This period in history has inspired the group’s creative research, focusing on the reconstruction of archaeological materials and making their own costumes using historical methods. Among the members are masters of ancient Latvian textile techniques: weaving, card weaving, ornament sewing, lace making, basketry, needle wickerwork. The women’s ensemble “Vilcenes” has sung at many culture centres and schools across Latvia. “Vilcenes” have also performed at the International Folklore Festival “Baltica” and Latvian song festivals, as well as abroad in Lithuania, France, Germany and Georgia.
