“Skutelnieki” is a regional word from Koknese for the processions of masked people that went from house to house at Meteņi (a traditional Latvian festival in early February), bringing blessings and joy to the inhabitants. They played music, livened things up, roused and encouraged people to get up and move. Each of us were also gnawed by the desire to play and express ourselves, to share in our emotions, our songs and our world view. Finally, one year around Meteņi we established the “Skutelnieki” group so that, as in earlier times, we could share with others the things that bring us joy, lift our spirits and get us dancing, moving from house to house, from ear to ear and maybe even from heart to heart.
