Horses are a common topic in Latvian folk songs, and very often these songs mention the colour of a horse’s coat. Today, many people are no longer familiar with the words describing horse colours, but official horse registration documents continue to use the traditional names.

The folklore group Savieši has created a programme of songs about horse colours. The book includes Inese Tone’s study of the use of these words in Latvian folk songs along with illustrations of each colour.
